LOCAL SPORTSWATCH: BYU’s Stanger wins on first day of golf tournament

TORONTO — BYU freshman-to-be Dalton Stanger of Orem teamed up with Blake Barens of Villa Park, Calif., and won an opening match in the IJGT Junior North American Cup golf tournament in Toronto on Tuesday. Stanger-Barens beat a Canadian duo 2-up in the 4-ball portion of the tournament to help Team USA to a 4-2 lead after the first day of the tournament.

Stanger parred No. 17 after Barens hit into the trees, helping the teams stay 1-up going into 18. Stanger alled parred the 18th hole and the U.S. duo won. Today’s play will be alternate-shot format.
