PREP FOOTBALL: VHSCA All-Star Game to be played Friday night
Written by Hamish Costello on July 21, 2011 – 12:29 amTanner Marshall is tough.
The 6-foot-3, 285-pound lineman from Grundy High School earned respect throughout Southwest Virginia and garnered his share of accolades for his fearlessness and relentless play up front on the gridiron.
He’ll be in the trenches again tonight during the annual Virginia High School Coaches Association All-Star Game at Darling Stadium in Hampton.
He’ll be the first Golden Wave player to compete in the event since Cary Perkins in 1989.
“It feels pretty good,” Marshall said. “This is the best of the best. I’m just excited to come out and put on a helmet one more time.”
A skilled offensive tackle that has signed with Concord University, Marshall was a driving force during Grundy’s successful 2010 season. The Golden Wave went 9-3 and reached the Region IV, Division 3 semifinals.
“The group of seniors we had, we were together since like the sixth grade and stuff,” Marshall said. “It was our last year. We had to make something of it.”
Marshall is joined on the West team by former foes like the Richlands duo of Will Lowe and Cody Thomas, who he competed against for four years.
“Yeah, we traded words a few times,” Marshall said.
Marshall actually road to the Tidewater region with Richlands coach Greg Mance, who will serve on the West coaching staff.
Along with Marshall, Lowe and Thomas, Nick Smith , Jake Hess , Tyler Courtney , Evan Stewart , Seth Clark , Joseph Vaughn , Evan Campbell , John Dotson Ammi Fields , Tyler Reynolds and Cameron Vanover are also on the West roster.
Gate City’s Bill Houseright and Lebanon’s John Adams join Mance on the West coaching staff.
